![]() Scattered through the gold fields of the North are an astounding number of artifacts that could help tell of both the hardships and the pleasures of mining for gold in the wilderness. This was a fun, entertaining and educational two hour visit.The Sixtymile Gold Dredge, Yukon & Alaska Finally, we were back aboard the train for the return to the station. This was a small victory as we won the unvoiced gold panning competition against our four traveling companions, as they each found $10-15 less gold than did we. ![]() My wife and I pooled our "find" and were told we had $31 worth. You can shop before or after your gold is weighed and its value determined. After panning, we explored the dredge camp, including climbing through Dredge # 8 itself. However, when you know what you are doing, the results can be lucrative. Experiencing the techniques used by miners to pan the creeks of Alaska for hours and hours, days and days, to collect their aspiration of wealth was eye opening. Everyone found sand size grains gold, as is their guarantee. Arriving at the camp, everyone tried panning for gold. Our ride continued around the corner where we received a brief but informative course on gold panning. The train ride took us to the feature attraction - Gold Dredge 8 - where we learned how the dredge worked the gold fields. We then took a seat aboard a replica of the narrow-gauge Tanana Valley Railroad and heard the conductor tell tales of prospectors who arrived by the thousands during the gold rush. This was truly interesting and fascinating. ![]() We began with a close up view of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and a presentation about it’s construction and operation. Our guide was personable and did a fine good communicating in an easy to listen to and understand style. Our group drove ourselves but we joined several full tour buses of visitors the day we were present. This attraction is well designed to handle large (tour bus) down to single person groups. Gold Dredge 8 is a two hour tour into the history of gold mining in this part of the state. Our group (6) selected this as our second stop along our self guided tour of Alaska. ![]()
